Zerox Project

This project was wayy fun and a little embarrassing. I did mine in the library first floor over in the corner so less people could see me. I enjoyed it. With my project I wanted to show the 3 sins, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, and See No Evil. At the bottom I just wanted to show off the way I scanned my face. I rolled my face along the scanner as the light moved across, creating an eerie look that reminded me of the characters from "The Hills Have Eyes". Also with the balloon was to make it look like it could be a lamp.

The Dada movement

You like my work of art??

"...dada applies itself to everything, and yet it is nothing" -Dada Manifesto, Tzara

I don't know how i feel about this. It contradicts itself. One can't give a label to something, saying that label names it nothing.

"...it draws no conclusion, no pride, no benefit. It has even stopped combating anything, in the realization that it's no use, that all this doesn't matter." -Dada Manifesto, Tzara

One can't say that Dada draws no conclusion, or that it doesn't combat anything. The act of giving Dada a name, and saying 'this is Dada' is drawing a conclusion, and Dada would have to combat anyone that said that is not what Dada is. It is contradictory.

I do agree with what he says about it being a state of mind, about it being a movement where philosophy doesn't matter.

I have always asked my friends something and tried to make them understand this, why was an elephant named an elephant? Is it because the phonetics of the word give us a feeling of size and weight, thus fitting the animal that is named elephant? What if a child was raised being taught that the name of "an elephant" was actually called a mouse, and vise versa. The child might have an elephant infestation, and might ride a mouse at the town zoo. To this child, these words would seem totally normal because that is what he was raised to know them to be called.

The Dada movement suggests that this is folly. That our world is only defined by these words we can place on it, and that if we can remove the prison bars of language that we have placed on our culture, that we will be able to be more creative, and that real art, born solely of the artist himself, can be made.

Okay, now I'm scaring myself...

Watched this video, i had just posted that if something could vibrate, and send out pulses, that would vibrate something else, and that something else would use the vibration to create, or convert the vibrations to electrons, then we would have wireless electricity. In this video, about halfway through, he explains how WiTricity works, and i must say, it's pretty much exactly how i thought it would :) yay me!!

LOL - I'm a genius...just not fast enough...

MIT beat me to the punch, lol...oh well...let's just say others had the same idea and the resources and brains to actually flesh it out. I always mention wireless electricity to friends, and they look at me and laugh. But when i explained how i think it would work, their laughter turns to curiosity. Looks like MIT's working on it, according to CNN:

The Invention of the Computer

So, the Apple II was the first personal computer. Steve Jobs took much of his ideas from the Atari game system which was out before the first PC (personal computer). Also, Microsoft's Graphic User Interface, as well as Apple's, were ideas taken from an In-House computer system that was operating at Xerox, but Xerox never capitalized on it because the big wigs at corporate did not agree that a GUI (graphic user interface) was the future of the personal computer. And so Apple and Microsoft both became famous from using other people's ideas.

I think that it's hard for someone to know what the future will bring. I can't imagine being 50 or 60 yrs old right now, seeing how far we have come with technology, through gaming, war, and a technological revolution. From computers the size of houses to computers the size of my palm. It's crazy, however, there isn't much new technology coming out, bluetooth, wireless internet, mainly things are just getting smaller, but not new.

What else can we do?

Wireless electricity-convert electrons into some sort of wave that travels through the air, then the receiver uses those waves to vibrate something that creates, or converts back to electrons??

Teleportation? 3-D Projections; Holograms? Computers controlled fully by our brain? Robots controlled by our brains? Hovercraft cars?

Whatever we come out with, I hope my lifetime brings something new, not just something smaller.

My Grid Art Project

I'm not done with it yet, but this is the update post, i'm trying to decide what to put on the white square. Any suggestions?

Flip Book Animations

Dylan's had a creative use of words. He stressed the importance of words and was the only one to do this, i feel, successfully.

Ellery's was very colorful and fun....well....the drawings were done clean and lighthearted, but the content was that of destroying a tree, not so fun. It was cute.

Andrea's was the life of a twig. Her images moved smoothly because there wasn't a lot of change from slide to slide, i liked this.

Gina's puppet was superb. The ability and time it must have taken to recreate the puppet so accurately was astounding. The story was the shortest, but it was smooth and clear.

Cheryl's represented a dream world, almost as though she was Dahli, but as an animation.

Maria's was very different, looked like an old movie, using the images of the kids walking. Would have loved to had it taken to the next step and had her color the slides.

Lea's was very fun and interesting to watch the orb transform from tree twister, to tree, to boat.

Brian's was creative with the bleeding heart motif, interesting idea/take on a relationship.

Kasey's ant story was prolly my favorite, watching it collect the pieces. The story was cute too.

Mike's was like mine, having someone escape from the page, fun!

Jessica's seemed backwards, full page drawings must have taken forever, it was cool idea and story, loved it.

Cara's was weird...a storm of stoves and then it falls on her head...

A Clockwork Orange - "Singing in the Rain"

This scene from "A Clockwork Orange" is pretty disturbing. I didn't watch the entire rape, the web videos stop when he starts to cut her shirt. I get the idea though. Obviously in the original version, he's joyously in love with the girl.

I think in this scene, he's obviously a twisted guy and is mentally confused. It's not weird that he would sing that song, as his character probably doesn't have much culture to him, and might have only remembered that song at the moment. Also, the juxtaposition of violence and rape alongside a song like "Singing in the Rain" is interesting. The viewer is confused because they want to feel happy and think positive when they hear that song, but the action of rape and destruction of life and morality shatter those initial feelings and the viewer is left feeling torn. The actor does a great job at making the viewers think he is crazy. Singing so easily makes it look like what he is doing is effortless, when really it could be just an avenue his character is taking to relieve pain from a bad experience he had.

Time Well Spent?

So, we had to type this paper. The assignment: Watch an Opera and talk about how I would retell the story using modern technology. I chose to tell the story as a musical but fully CGI. Computer Generated Images is what that stands for and many video games, like Final Fantasy seen below, utilize them to show scenes in great detail, that today, almost look real.

Second Class - Opera OVERLOAD!!

Today in class was different. We spent a lot of time watching clips from different operas and movies with opera in them. My favorite was definitely the final opera, The Magic Flute. That opera sounded very farmiliar and i loved the way the woman's voice goes up and down the notes just hitting each one, not extending the notes. It was cool to see the crazy fireworks in Vatel and how they used pyrotechnics back then.

For my paper i will probably watch La Boheme.

It sounds like a good one to watch, and I have seen Rent on Broadway in NYC, and I really liked it, so I think I will like this opera!

PS. I lost my homework folder and need to find it, i'm lost without it.
PPS. I watched the movie Julie and Julia last night and loved it, totally made me want to BLOG BLOG BLOG!!!!

First Day of Class

Today was the first day of class. The teacher, my academic advisor Santiago, seems pretty funny and smart. I enjoyed the excerpt from the movie he showed us and thought the guy had an amazing voice. It kinda reminded me of the opera from the movie, The Fifth Element, when the BLUE lady sings during the fight scene, it was fierce.

Definition I learned today...

"FORESKIN"

read it, lol...not quite Santi, but close :)
